The overall goal of CGU, Odisha is to prepare its students to practice engineering and, in particular, to deal with the forces and materials of nature. Thus, from the earliest days of its inception, the instructional laboratories at CGU, Odisha have been an essential part of undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs. Indeed, Department of Mechanical Engineering gives emphasis on theory classes as well as hands-on-training at its state-of-art laboratories.

Mechanical Measurement Lab

Mechanical Measurement Laboratory covers the working principle of the various measuring instruments. Students learn to select the appropriate instrument as per the requirement of the process, and operate the same. It is equipped with the following set ups catering to the requirements of curriculum for Mechanical Engineering students:

  • Vibration measuring instruments interfaced with LDS RT Pro Photon software
  • LVDT with accessories
  • Dead weight pressure gauge

Material Testing

Material Testing Laboratory demonstrates the basic principles in the area of strength and mechanics of materials and structural analysis to the undergraduate students through a series of experiments.  In this lab the experiments are performed to measure the properties of the materials such as impact strength, tensile strength, compressive strength, hardness, fatigue strength etc. It is equipped with the following set ups:

Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory is well-equipped and enables students to evaluate the performance characteristics of two stroke and four stroke diesel and petrol engines. The lab also contains basic parts of an engine like Carburetor, Fuel injection system, Engine cooling system, and the cut section models. The major equipments are:

Heat Transfer Laboratory is well-equipped with calibrated equipments and enables students to understand the basic modes of heat transfer namely conduction, convection and radiation. The Laboratory houses about eighteen experimental test rigs. The major equipments are:

This laboratory provides the knowledge on the application of laws of mechanics, and dynamic behaviour of machine components. The Laboratory houses about twenty two experimental set ups. The major equipments are:

Workshop

In Workshop, students apply the concepts of Machining, Welding, and Fitting. This caters to the needs of first year as well as higher semester students. Students are exposed to a variety of operations namely Turning, Shaping, Milling, Planing, Grinding, Slotting, Drilling, Arc & Gas welding, and Shearing. The major equipments are:

Engineering Drawing

Engineering Drawing and Machine Drawing are the two important components of the curriculum. In this facility, all drawings are done manually using pencil and paper. Students are exposed to computer aided drafting in the higher semesters in one of the high end facilities.
